Dear FANHS Family, 2020 Conference Attendees, and Friends,
Due to the ongoing concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19), the impact of travel restrictions and the need for social distancing, the 18th Biennial Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Conference that was scheduled to take place July 15-18, 2020, in Waikiki, Hawaii, has been CANCELED. With unanimous approval by the FANHS Board of Trustees, we decided to make this extraordinary and heartbreaking decision in response to the direction by health authorities, government officials, and the World Health Organization (WHO) who have declared COVID-19 a pandemic. We are sorry the 2020 Conference had to be canceled, but we have a clear responsibility to act for the health and well-being of our FANHS members.
We realize that our FANHS gatherings have been more than a conference. For nearly 38 years, FANHS has held space for historical and personal transformations that have profoundly shaped the lives and relationships of those who have attended our biennial conferences. This year’s conference would have been similar with the theme of “Kau Kau Tin”, which echoes the development of community and building lifelong friendships. Together, we have built a supportive and vibrant national network of those who are deeply committed to the mission of FANHS. As a national community, we work to transform our history and a sense of pride in our identity. Our community strength will carry us forward through this difficult time as we collectively face the challenges of this global pandemic.
We have attached additional information related to the FANHS conference cancellation. The FANHS Hawaii State Chapter will send refunds to those who have already paid their fees for registration. Please allow up to 4 weeks to receive the refund.
We thank everyone who worked so hard to organize our FANHS Biennial Conference and thank all of you who planned to attend. We look forward to seeing each other again in the future, as we believe we will get through this challenging time as a stronger organization. We will be in touch with members about the 2020 FANHS Trustee Elections. The election will likely be held electronically. Until then, we wish you good health and well-being and ask you to stay safe.
