Themes
2020 – “The History of Filipino American Activism” highlights the myriad ways Filipino Americans have participated in social justice movements; honors the history of Filipino American solidarity with other communities in their fights for our equity and justice; recognizes the advocacy of our Filipino American healthcare workers who are actively protecting and fighting for our lives everyday amidst this global pandemic. 2020 marks: the 50th Anniversary of the Filipino American Far West Convention in Seattle, 75th anniversary of The Battle of Luzon in World War II; 90th anniversary of the Watsonville Riots of 1930.
2019 – “Pinay Visionaries: Celebrating Filipina American Women” recognizes Pinay contributions to history and the Filipina/o American community nationwide as leaders, laborers, scholars, scientists, and activists who have been the backbone of the Filipina/o American community, overcome racial and gender discrimination, and persevered to contribute to their respective fields. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave White women in the United States the right to vote.
2018 – “Turning Points” commemorates three events that changed forever the lives of Filipinos and Filipino Americans: the declaration of Philippine independence and establishment of the First Philippine Republic, the Spanish American War, and the establishment of Ethnic Studies. These events were turning points in Filipina/o/x American history.
2017 – “70 Years Since the US-Philippines Military Bases Agreement” commemorates the monumental effect the agreement had on US-Philippines relations and the larger Pacific Rim, and t effect the law had on the Filipina/o American community. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the Filipino American National Historical Society, which preserves and disseminates the history of Filipino Americans.
2016 – “1946: A Turning Point” commemorates the 70th Anniversary of events and pieces of legislation that transformed the lives of Filipinos in the Philippines and in the United States in 1946 such as the following: Recision Act of 1946, Luce-Celler Bill, and Philippine Independence from USA.
2015 – 1965: Tipping Point for the Filipino American Community to commemorate the 50th anniversary of three momentous events: Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 was passed and Filipino farm workers (Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and many more manongs) lead the Delano Grape Strike. Additionally, at that time, Filipino American men were either enlisting in the military or fighting in the Vietnam War.
2014 – “Making Our Presence Known” commemorate October 18, 2014 as the 427th anniversary since 1587 of the First presence of Filipino in the Continental United States
